BOOT CAMP (THE NEW YOGA)

Yoga may be good for you but it's not quite tough enough for some fitness junkies. ORIGINAL BOOTCAMP is the biggest fitness trend to hit the parks, beaches and reserves of Sydney, complete with pack marches, obstacle courses and serious discipline, meted out by ex-soldiers turned fitness instructors.

It may not feel particularly Zen, but after attending some early morning sessions you will lose a lot of fat and seriously increase muscular and cardio-vascular endurance.

According to the founder of the military based fitness regime, 'Chief' Brabon "The industry was moving towards gentle exercise programs that promote health and wellbeing rather than specific goal-orientated training," he adds that "we decided in the complete opposite direction, focussing on pushing people to achieve their personal goals."

THE MAN WHO PUT'S THE BOOT INTO BOOTCAMP

"Don't pretend. You know you love it!" These are the words of encouragement from the man behind the bootcamp fitness fad sweeping the nation, the man most people just call 'Chief'.

His prophetic comments were heard as the quasi-military style training program, ORIGINAL BOOTCAMP, was held on Sydney's Eastern Beaches last week.

Using techniques similar to those endured by Army and Marine recruits, participants sign on for a four-week, intense physical training regime, for 75 minutes three mornings a week.

Men and women aged between their late teens and early fifties are pushed through challenging yet entertaining training sessions, designed to achieve maximum results, in the minimum amount of time.

The pioneer of Boot Camp training here in Australia, 'Chief Brabon, is a former Australian Army infantry soldier, and has over 15 years experience as a personal trainer and military fitness advisor.

There's no better way to bond than while you're working your butt off. The ORIGINAL BOOTCAMP is a four-week military-style program that involves intense physical training, army drills and even obstacle courses. Flirting at 6 am may be tough, but at least you'll see him at his most humble and sober. Everyone wears the same t-shirt, so you can be sure he likes you for you, and not just your cleavage.

BOOTCAMP - THE HOTTEST WORKOUT

In matching grey t-shirts stained with rain and sweat - 40 odd Recruits are huddled together on the beach huffing and panting. With the super-fit lead-instructor Chief breathing down their necks, they have to hatch a plan to attack their opposition's bunker.

Given that they have already spent the last hour building their own bunker by filling15kg sandbags and hauling them across the beach, they are understandably exhausted.

This is not a military exercise; it's ORIGINAL BOOTCAMP.

Every morning across Australia, at beaches, parks and wherever else there is open land, recruits are lined up to be pushed to their limits in the name of fitness.

The original, and arguably the best Boot Camp program is run by a man known to his Recruits and Instructors simply as CHIEF.

Chief's real name is James Brabon, and each morning before the sun rises, he orders Recruits to run, crawl, jump, carry and roll their way to peak fitness. Beware though, one taste of this intensive routine that boasts "no excuses, no apologies, just serious results" and you'll be hooked. "It's like a cult," says first-timer 26-year-old Sarah Dart, "but I'm so addicted I just can't miss it."
